The Ministry for Children and Family Development (MCFD) in the North Region of BC recently completed three sessions geared toward awareness of Section 70 Rights for children in care of the government and the UN convention on the Rights of a Child. The information sharing session included an overview of both section 70 and what that means with regards to children and youth in care as well as a look at the UN convention and what it means for all children in society.
One of the important discussions that came about during the training was the importance in understanding what a right is and that child rights cannot be withheld or taken away. The need for increase advocacy and the complaints process was a large part of the discussion. The MCFD North affirmed the importance of ensuring that a child’s caregiver/guardians know about their rights and know the process when rights are not being respected or followed.
